The Middle School Mathematics Program instructs students according to the New York State Mathematics Standards. Teachers work collaboratively to develop lessons and assessments and to prepare for the NYS Math Assessments that take place in the spring in grades 6, 7 and 8.
Middle School math topics include number sense and operations, algebra, statistics and probability, measurement, and geometry.
The 6th grade course is our introductory middle school mathematics course, providing a continuous development of the skills, concepts and strategies developed in elementary school. There is an emphasis placed on developing students’ problem solving strategies and selected topics of the middle level sequence are taught to a mastery level. The sixth grade areas of study include, number and operations, measurement, algebra, geometry, probability and statistics.
In addition to grade level math, Accelerated Math and Math Skills are offered for both grades 7 and 8. Grade 8 Accelerated Math students take the Regents exam at the end of the year and receive high school credit for successful completion of the course. Math Skills is taught in conjunction with classroom teachers on areas of math weakness. Students work on fundamental math skills and receive extra support for grade level topics.
*All students in Grades 6-8 will take the N.Y. State mathematics assessment in the spring.
